The People Behind the Mission
At the Monadnock Area Transitional Shelter (MATS), our work is possible because of the people who stand behind it. Leading that effort is our Board of Directors—a group of thoughtful, dedicated individuals who roll up their sleeves and lead with heart. Their guidance shapes everything we do, from long-term strategy to everyday decisions that support those we serve
Neighbors Helping Neighbors
The Monadnock Area Transitional Shelter is guided by a committed, hands-on Board of Directors. Each member is a volunteer who brings passion, experience, and a belief in the power of local action to help those facing housing insecurity in our region.
This is not a ceremonial board—it’s an active, working board made up of community members who are deeply connected to the Monadnock region. They contribute their time, skills, and energy to ensure that MATS can continue to provide safe transitional housing and essential support services for families and individuals in need.
With backgrounds in business, education, human services, finance, and nonprofit leadership, our Board reflects a cross-section of the community. What unites them is a shared commitment to helping neighbors find stability, dignity, and hope.
Our Team
-
For more than 16 years, Susan Howard has been the cornerstone of MATS. As Program Director, she provides the vision, leadership, and expertise that shape every aspect of our work. With a B.S. in Human Services and extensive experience as a Community Family Services Coordinator and Case Manager, Susan combines professional knowledge with extraordinary compassion. She is the steady hand guiding our program, building trust with participants, and fostering the relationships that make long-term success possible.
Susan’s leadership has been instrumental in establishing MATS as a trusted resource in the community. Under her direction, countless participants have found the stability, confidence, and support they need to rebuild their lives and transition into sustainable housing. Quite simply, Susan is the backbone of our organization — her dedication, wisdom, and tireless commitment are the foundation of MATS’ success.

As Program Coordinator, Michaela Balcombe is the driving force behind MATS’ daily operations. For years, she has ensured that everything runs smoothly, balancing the ever-changing needs of our participants with efficiency, care, and compassion. Beyond her day-to-day work, Michaela is the organizational mastermind behind some of our largest annual fundraisers, including NH Gives and Empty Bowls — events that are vital to sustaining our mission. Known for her unwavering dedication and “whatever it takes” spirit, Michaela is a cornerstone of our team, making sure participants receive the support they need while strengthening MATS for the future.
